Case Study: Rohingya Crisis and Bangladesh

Described in 2013 by the United Nations as one of the most persecuted people in the world, the Rohingya are a majority Muslim and stateless Indo-Aryan population from Rakhine State, Myanmar. In a divisive political environment of tight military control and following severe persecution, approximately 600,000 Rohingya refugees have fled to neighboring Bangladesh. To make matters even more complicated, this has happened under the watch of the civilian Burmese Government led by the Nobel Prize-winning Aung San Su Kyi.

With terms such as ethnic cleansing, genocide, and human rights abuses being used by members of the international community, we invite domestic and international students to engage in meaningful dialogue with each other, faculty members, clubs, external organizations, and other stakeholders to raise awareness about this major global issue.
